Back and neck pain episodes are often short-lived — but they can be severe, debilitating, and in some cases become chronic. An examination tells you which one you are dealing with.
Understanding the condition
What causes back and neck pain
Over 80% of people experience back or neck pain at some point in their life. It is the second leading cause of disability in the United States. The costs associated with back and neck pain is estimated to be greater than $100 billion annually. Although, back and neck pain episodes are often short-lived, however, can be severe, debilitating, and in some cases, become chronic. Common causes of back and neck pain include herniated discs, radiculopathy (pinched nerve), degenerative disc disease (internal disc disruption), and facet joint arthritis.
Why symptom-only treatment falls short
Traditional treatments are aimed at just reducing symptoms. These treatments are often band-aids, masking the symptoms and not addressing the underlying condition. If patients do not get the relief they are looking for from these traditional treatments they may opt for an invasive surgical procedure or dangerous pain medications. This may possibly lead to chronic pain, advanced degeneration of adjacent segments of the spine, and eventual additional surgery.
Common Causes
Which of these is driving your pain changes the treatment entirely — that is what the first visit is for.
